Perplexity is the AI engine that shows its work. Almost every answer comes from a live web search, with numbered sources beside it. That makes it the easiest engine to track brand mentions in, and the easiest to act on, because you can see exactly which pages decided the answer. Here's how I'd track your brand in Perplexity, by hand first and then with a tool.
Full disclosure: I make Presence Scout, which tracks Perplexity among other engines. The manual method below works without any tool.
How do I track brand mentions in Perplexity by hand?
You need three things: a question list, a clean session and a place to write results down.
1. Write 20 buyer questions
Use the questions people ask before they know your name, such as "best payroll software for a 20-person company", not "is [your brand] good". Add a few comparison questions with named competitors. My guide to choosing prompts to track goes deeper.
2. Ask in a clean session
Log out, or use a private window, so your own history doesn't shape the answer. Keep the wording identical every time; small wording changes produce different answers.
3. Record three outcomes per question
- Mentioned: is your brand named, and in what position?
- Cited: is one of your own pages among the sources?
- Competitors: who is named instead of you, or alongside you?
A spreadsheet with one row per question and one column per week is enough to start.
What Perplexity's sources tell you
This is where Perplexity is more useful than other engines. When you're not mentioned, open the sources: they're the pages Perplexity trusted for that question. Usually they fall into a few types:
- Review and comparison sites that list your competitors but not you.
- Community threads, often Reddit, where buyers recommend tools.
- Publishers and blogs with "best of" lists.
- Competitors' own pages that answer the question directly.
Each type has a different fix: get listed and reviewed, answer helpfully in the thread, pitch the author, or publish a page that answers the question better. Track which sources come up most often across your questions; that list is your plan.
How often to check
Weekly. Perplexity's answers change from run to run, so one check is a snapshot and proves little. A weekly check on the same questions shows the trend, which is what tells you whether your work is moving anything.
When a Perplexity visibility tracker helps
By hand works for 10 to 20 questions on one engine. Past that, the copying gets slow and the data inconsistent. A tracker runs the same questions the same way every week, stores each answer and its sources, and compares you with competitors.
Some tools whose plans include Perplexity, from their own pricing pages in October 2026:
- Presence Scout: from $29 a month on Starter, 50 questions weekly, with ChatGPT, AI Overviews, AI Mode and Google rankings alongside. Perplexity isn't on the free plan.
- Otterly.AI: from $29 a month, 15 questions daily.
- LLM Pulse: from €49 a month, 50 questions weekly.
- Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit: $99 a month, 25 questions daily.
I compare more tools in detail in best ChatGPT rank trackers; most of them track Perplexity too.
Turn tracking into visibility
Tracking only matters if it changes something. Each week, pick the source that appears most often where you're missing, and do the one thing that gets you onto it. In Presence Scout, the citations view groups those sources by type with a suggested next step for each, so the to-do list writes itself.
Perplexity explains how it searches and cites in How does Perplexity work?, worth a read before you start.
Frequently asked questions
How do I track brand mentions in Perplexity?
Ask Perplexity the questions your buyers ask, in a logged-out or fresh session, and record whether your brand is named, its position, and which sources are cited. Repeat the same questions weekly, by hand or with a Perplexity visibility tracker.
Does Perplexity always cite its sources?
Almost always. Perplexity runs a live web search for most questions and lists the pages it used as numbered sources, which makes it the easiest AI engine to diagnose.
How can I improve my visibility in Perplexity?
Look at the pages Perplexity cites for your buyer questions, then get your brand onto them: reviews, comparisons, community threads and your own pages that answer the question directly.
